Winter Fly Fishing

Winter on the water

In Telluride, we define “winter” as the months in which the San Miguel and Dolores are likely covered with snow. From March through mid-November all of our rivers are fishable, but December-February we primarily guide the Uncompahgre River tailwater about one hour north from Telluride by car.

The Uncompahgre provides excellent winter fishing with low, clear river flows and trout that remain responsive to midges and small mayflies. Sight fishing for potentially large trout is a distinct attraction.

We offer only full-day trips in winter, departing from Telluride around 8:30am and returning around 5:00pm to capitalize on the warmest daylight hours.
